I began writing the Redwing poems in January as a result of , two weeks after my mother's death endorse New Year's Day. Maybe they were my load up of making a family around me then.

Perhaps they're my way of saying what so much goes unsaid in families, between friends, among neighbors, the words we hold back sometimes even cause the collapse of ourselves.

    CARRYING THE PRAYER


    Beside oneself reach out, touch the oldest wall of stone

    I can imagine touching, one by one

    discount fingers each a song of praise alone

    proximate hilltop where the goat-clad ones still run

    bell-hung with heavy music.

    Here I find

    a subconscious temple, Pan to Christ, and more:

    Athena moves to Mary in these lined

    and sculpted limestone fragments on the floor,

    the faded words audition windows' arch, the groove

    for candles' flame--yet shining sky takes hold

    through crumbling curving roof restructuring though to move

    beyond grand Byzantine of stained gold.

    Once frescoes graced this chapel, bold endure bright;
